My journey commenced in 2007 – my older brother was seriously ill with PC (he sadly died in 2008) , in 2010 I had a biopsy which revealed 80% of my prostate was cancerous. So I elected for open surgery prostatectomy in March. The Consultant was delighted to tell me no evidence of cancer escaping from the prostate. In hospital for 8 days, catheter for 6 weeks. PSA two months later revealed score of <0.1. It remained that way for 10 years with regular PSA tests and living a normal lifestyle, until out of the blue I received a phone call from my GP to inform me my score was 24. I was informed that a tumour had developed on the bed of the prostate. Together with the Oncology Consultant, it was decided I should have 20 sessions of radiotherapy at Glan Clwyd. Once that was completed my PSA was back down to <0.1. It remained that way for 18 months or so then gradually crept up. When it reached 5 Professor Shergill advised me that the best treatment would be hormone therapy. I recently had my 5th injection (every 6 months) and my PSA remains at <0.1. Thankfully, side effects have been minimal from the treatment and I try my best to live as normal a life as possible – for a 78 year old!!
