Mark Connolly – Sponsored Walk

Recent recruit to the Wrexham Prostate Cancer Support Group Mark Connolly was quick to earn his stripes after encouraging more than 250 of his friends and family to participate at a fun day kindly hosted at the Turf Pub, Mold Rd by Wayne Jones and his staff.

He added “I was diagnosed with prostate cancer earlier this year and I wanted to use the event — under the banner of One in Eight.  It is the sad fact that 1 in 8 men in the UK are diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. I have become a member of the local Prostate Cancer Support Group and I received the warmest of welcomes. They are anxious to raise £100.000 to purchase technology to treat people here in Wrexham.  Their primary objective is to champion and heighten the awareness of the disease and the need for more men in the region to get tested by asking their GPs for a simple blood test.

The whole deal was etched with my partner Linda and initially it was just going to be a sponsored walk but local band Declan Swans offered to entertain us, so many local businesses volunteered prizes for the raffle and some were so good we auctioned them. Almost 150 people participated in the walk which covered every nook and cranny of the city centre.  I haven’t finished counting all of the money and at present but I am optimistic of exceeding my expectations with the total just short of £5,000 and money is still coming in – plus my JustGiving page is still open at https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/1in8wrexham

The event raised a whopping £7141!
